I was standing in the mattress department of a furniture store in Kelowna, British Columbia when my future quietly walked out of an office.
I was there to host a live radio broadcast. Doug, the store owner, was explaining the features of a mattress when I looked past him and saw his daughter, Kelly, walk to the front counter. She didn't know it, but in that moment she changed the course of my life.
Together we discovered something else we had in common: a love of homes.
It started with our first home in Kelowna in 1987. We renovated it, created a basement apartment for ourselves, rented the upstairs, and eventually sold it. Then we did it again. And again. Over the years we bought, renovated, and sold a number of homes, learning firsthand what worked, what didn't, and how every move brought new opportunities and new challenges.
My career in radio eventually brought us to Vernon, British Columbia, where we continued buying, renovating, and selling homes while raising our young family. When that chapter came to an end, we made another life-changing decision and moved to Peterborough, Ontario, Kelly's hometown.
With our two young sons, we bought a home we'd never seen in person. It was a leap of faith, but it turned out to be the right home. Like the homes before it, we rolled up our sleeves and transformed it through a major renovation. Looking back, every home we owned taught us something new about what makes a house work for the people living in it.
Those experiences shaped the way I think about real estate.
